Important cereal in northern Ghana. Used for TZ, pito (local beer), and porridge.
Most drought-tolerant cereal. Staple grain in Upper East and Upper West regions.
A highly versatile palm producing coconut water, oil-rich copra, and industrial coir. National production reaches ~250 million nuts annually, but processing handles only 80 million—exposing a massive surplus for desiccated coconut and virgin coconut oil exports. Dwarf varieties allow high-density planting; Tall varieties live up to 80 years.
🌰 Shea Nut Vitellaria paradoxa
A quintessential wild-harvested parkland tree endemic to the northern savannas. Shea butter is prized globally in cosmetics and as a cocoa butter equivalent. A critical socioeconomic lifeline for female-dominated aggregation communities. Shea parklands sequester ~2.49 Mg/ha of carbon, making them a powerful climate change mitigation tool.
Major export fruit. MD2 (Gold) variety dominates. Large plantations in Nsawam and Akuapem areas.
A premium tropical fruit cultivated intensively for domestic consumption and lucrative European export markets. Keitt and Kent fiberless varieties dominate commercial production. TCDA developed a USD-indexed pricing algorithm resulting in a legally mandated farmgate floor price to shield farmers from exchange rate depreciation.
🫚 Ginger Zingiber officinale
Used in cooking, beverages (sobolo), and traditional medicine. Growing export demand.
Major dry-season vegetable in northern Ghana. Bawku and Navrongo are key production areas.
🍉 Watermelon Citrullus lanatus
Lucrative dry-season crop. Very popular in urban markets.

Shade-tolerant tuber widely grown as intercrop under tree crops. Both corms and leaves are edible. A staple in forest-zone households.
🍠 Sweet Potato Ipomoea batatas
Fast-maturing, drought-tolerant vine crop rich in vitamin A (especially orange-fleshed varieties). Gaining popularity for nutrition programmes.
High-protein legume with strong demand from poultry-feed mills and food-processing companies. Also fixes nitrogen in soil.
🥜 Bambara Groundnut Vigna subterranea
Highly drought-tolerant indigenous legume, complete protein source. Underutilised but gaining renewed interest for food security.
🌰 Tiger Nut Cyperus esculentus
Small tubers used for snacking, tiger-nut milk, and oil. High demand in both local and export markets.
🥜 Cashew Anacardium occidentale
A highly resilient, drought-tolerant cash crop and the vanguard of agricultural diversification in northern Ghana. Raw nuts are exported globally (mainly to India and Vietnam), while the pseudo-fruit offers untapped potential for juice and biofuel. TCDA enforces a Minimum Producer Price to protect farmers from predatory aggregation pricing.
An essential industrial tree crop tapped for raw latex, processed into cup-lumps and technically specified block rubber for the global automotive sector. Cultivation is anchored by the Rubber Outgrower Plantation Project (ROPP) managed by GREL, integrating thousands of outgrowers across 11,000+ hectares. TCDA Regulation 50 now requires export permits for raw cup-lumps to incentivize domestic processing.
☕ Coffee (Robusta) Coffea canephora
A rugged, caffeine-dense coffee species adapted to lower altitudes and higher temperatures than Arabica. Ghana's industry is entirely dedicated to Robusta, with production in regions overlapping with cocoa cultivation. Optimal mature yield of ~100 kg/year per tree unit requires precise nutritional intervention. Meloidogyne root-knot nematodes are a severe subterranean threat.
Traditional northern Ghana cash crop supplying local textile mills. Lint and seed are both valuable products.
🌾 Sesame (Benne) Sesamum indicum
Oil-seed crop with strong export demand for confectionery and health foods. Short-cycle and fits well after early-maturing cereals.

A foundational horticultural crop for fresh consumption and domestic commercial juice extraction. Dominated by the Late Valencia scion on Rough Lemon rootstock, selected for vigorous growth and Tristeza virus tolerance. Severely threatened by Citrus Black Spot (Guignardia citricarpa) and Pseudocercospora angolensis fruit and leaf spot disease. MoFA mandates strict budwood indexing programs.

Fast-growing fruit rich in vitamins A and C. Solo and Sunrise varieties popular for local and export markets.
A rapidly expanding, extremely high-value export crop prized for its lipid content. Possesses an exceptionally shallow feeder root system — most nutrient/water uptake occurs within the top 30cm of soil, making traditional broadcast fertilization highly inefficient and risky. Acutely intolerant to soil salinity and elevated Electrical Conductivity (EC). Pricing driven by European export premiums.
